  • Cheaper and smarter lights are gradually replacing incandescent bulbs and fluorescent lamps (CFLs). Harshvardhan Chitale, the vice-chairman and managing director of Philips Lighting India predicts that in the next 5 to 10 years, smart connected lights will be one of the important Internet of Things (IoT) devices.

    In the next generation changes in lighting, people will begin to adopt intelligent and smart lights which can be considered as IoT devices. In the next 5 to 10 years, lights will be one of the IoT driven devices. Next generation energy efficient LED lighting with sensors that can determine occupancy and temperature are an ideal example of smart connected lighting.

    Based on the projections of a recent TechSci Research titled “India LED Lighting Market Forecast & opportunities, 2020” the LED lighting market of India will grow at a compounded growth rate of more than 32% from 2015 to 2020. People will always choose smart devices. For example, if an individual wants to upgrade the phone, he will consider changing to a smart phone and not landline. If people will upgrade their existing lights or install new ones, they will opt for smart lighting systems.

    According to Chitale, India is prepared to adopt smart lighting solutions on a larger scale. The country is technologically aware. India has become one of the largest markets for smart phones and smart lighting is essentially on the same technology backbone.

    India has the digital infrastructure, technology awareness and software progress necessary for the development of smart applications. However, LED lighting in India or smart lighting is still in single digits or less than 10%. However, since smart lighting is growing rapidly, Chitale expects that smart lighting will also generate high demand in the India. In fact, Naya Raipur, the capital city of Chhattisgarh has upgraded its street lighting system to smart connected lights.

    12v LED strip lighting is perfect for architectural and commercial applications because it can be used for lighting designs and special effects that can be controlled through different options like Wi-Fi, DMX and RF. The high intensity LED strip lighting can be an ideal replacement for conventional, high maintenance light sources.
